Auchterarder Audit – Saturday 26th June, 1pm, Auchterarder Church Community Centre Five years on from the iconic Make Poverty History events and the G8 summit in Gleneagles Oxfam Scotland is bringing together activists from around the country to look at the progress that has been made on the promises delivered at the G8 meeting in Gleneagles and the work that remains to meet these pledges. What is your memory of the Make Poverty History campaign – the white wristbands, the march around Edinburgh or the opportunities it created to make world leaders listen and realise global injustice is not acceptable in our world? Join us at Auchterarder Church Community Centre on Saturday 26th June for an afternoon of lively discussion and to take part in a series of workshops on topics such as debt, trade justice and climate change. At a time when world leaders will be meeting in Canada for the G8 summit let your voice be heard and let’s make clear the need to Make Poverty History. To book your place or for more information please contact Sara at scowan@oxfam.org.uk or 0141 285 8874, buses from Edinburgh and Glasgow will be running but places are limited so please book in advance.

John Pilger | UK 2007 | Cert 12A | 95mins + short discussion (see below) Tues 4 May, 6pm - Filmhouse, Edinburgh Award winning journalist John Pilger presents a compelling view of Washington's intervention over more than 50 years in Latin American states, propping up often brutal regimes which have reinforced the 'invisibility' of their majority peoples. The film sets similar policies supposedly continuing in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon against the rise of vibrant, accountable and popular uprisings in countries like Venezuela and Bolivia that are leading to a powerful sense of change among poor communities. "An extraordinary and fascinating documentary" Empire Whatever the results, the General Election - following hot on the heels of this screening - will undoubtedly be marked by public feeling about democratic accountability and the West's intervention in Iraq. This screening will be followed by a short audience discussion reflecting on the question: "how should British governments safeguard democracy at home and abroad?" With contributions from founder members of the UK economic justice movement, and Dr Mark Aspinwall, (Edinburgh University), a former staffer in the US House of Representatives.

A short course in presentation skills. Many people are called upon to speak to groups of people - talking about their experiences as a volunteer, introducing a speaker or making a formal presentation. This course of 2 sessions of 2 ½ hours each will give the basic confidence to do this and to develop existing skills. Richard Ellis runs a training and consultancy business in Edinburgh. He works with both the public and private sectors and has carried out training for the British Council in 15 countries. He has jointly published three books on communication and is sole author of three further ones. He trains people in communication skills, effective presentations, report writing, better chairing of meetings and interview skills and has worked with doctors, dentists, lecturers, managers of charities, housing associations and local government. He will look at such areas as: the key elements of public speaking, planning your talk; coping with nerves; making the best possible use of visual aids; how to handle questions. As a Returned VSO Volunteer he has kindly offered to donate all proceeds to VSO This training is suitable for anyone who would like to develop their presentation and public speaking skills. Cost and ticket/booking information: £35 per person for 2 sessions of 2 ½ hours each. For more information and / or to reserve a place email nick@vso-edinburgh.org.uk

Sign in for venue details. It's Christmas Dinner time!! I know! I know! It is very early to be even contemplating such matters, however, that is the nature of things, so we have to deal with this now - or just be hungry. It had been proposed that we try a Kurdish restaurant this year, but when I tried to book, they told me they'd be closed for repainting. So, based on the positive feedback from last year's event, I have booked Chop Chop once again. Here are the details: Where: Chop Chop, Morrison Street, Edinburgh When: Tuesday 8 December (it's our usual "second Tuesday of the month" slot) Some questions you may have: How do I book? contact me by email and tell me you want to come (with your contact details and the number of places you would like to book). Please put "VSO Christmas Dinner" in the header so your email doesn't vanish into my junk mail. Do you need a deposit? Well, I had a slightly obscure conversation with the restaurant on the matter of a deposit and the upshot is that I think I will need one, but not right at this minute, so please be prepared for an advance cash request! How many places are there? I have booked for 16, but have said that last year I started at around that number and in the end we were closer to 30. Obviously, it is bettter if we can give definite figures as soon as possible - and frankly, it'll make life easier for me too - but I appreciate that things change and suddenly you find you are able to make this tasty bash! What's on the menu? This is typical northern Chinese food. Last year we just went for the banquet, which seemed to provide loads of food. If anyone is vegetarian, please let me know when you book and I'll advise the restaurant. Have they a website? www.chop-chop.co.uk I've got a question you haven't answered! Then please let me know. Just drop me an email! I hope that you will want to come to our Christmas night out and, as they alsways say, "book early to avoid disappointment!" Best wishes Shona

Anne Thomson an RV says: "I have written a book about being a VSO in Zambia between Oct 2000 and Mar 2003. It's published by Librario and is called Wash My Bikini (an aide memoire given to me when I was trying to learn the local language. The word for Good Morning in Bemba is Washmibukeeni.) My royalties from sales of the book are going to VSO and Jonathan Dimbleby has written the foreword to it. It will be launched at Blackwell's, South Bridge, Edinburgh on Thursday 30th July at 6.30 when Susie Darcy has agreed to do the introduction. If any of the group members would like to come to the launch can they either please get in touch with me (tel 0131 333 1126) when I shall arrange for an invitation to be sent or contact the front desk at Blackwell's in South Bridge who will have tickets, but I expect if they just come along they will be made very welcome and there is always the glass of vino.
The book will be available on Amazon and if anyone is ordering through them, if they use the link http://www.vso.org.uk/donate/shopping/amazon.asp#0 VSO gets a few pennies more.
Best Wishes

The Fourth Edinburgh World Justice Festival (EWJF) will run from 18th - 31st May 2009. All events are FREE (except the festival gig starring Dave Rovics and Attila the Stockbroker) and all are open to everyone. The festival is run voluntarily by local people and gathers together diverse campaigns and groups under the common value of seeking justice for all, rather than for a privileged few, which will undoubtedly strike a chord with many people this year as the effects of this economic downturn become increasingly apparent. The EWJF is now in its fourth year, having been inspired by the Make Poverty History demonstrations and the G8 alternative conference. In light of the economic crisis in which we find ourselves, millions of people are demonstrating across the globe for a better world. The EWJF seeks to offer the people of Edinburgh a platform through which to gather together, share ideas and work towards positive change in our own communities and as global citizens in this troubled world. Events include music, film, discussions and presentations, as well as an all day bookfair offering talks and performances from local musicians throughout the day. The EWJF seeks to enable people to engage with justice issues at varying levels, covering issues such as climate change, fair trade, human rights and international development.
